I had a weekend!

Apr. 28th, 2008 | 06:40 am

First, Harold & Kumar: Escape from Guantanamo Bay: I was kind of disappointed. Possibly only because I have been looking forward to this movie SO MUCH since a trailer first appeared on the internet. I felt like the humor was less clever and subtle. But then again, I am talking about Harold & Kumar, and I'm not sure how subtle the comedy really was in the first one. Christopher Meloni's cameo should have been longer. But it was funny. Not as funny as Strange Wilderness.

Second, Saturday was packed full with an amazing engagement party for two very lovely people, and a Metafilter meetup that was tons of fun. Meeting new people is fun! I spent some quality time with Miss T-Po yesterday watching Coupling (the British one), and it was entertaining.

And now, I have a librarian rant. But I'll cut it for you! librarian rant! )

Saturday afternoon I spent 2.5 hours at kung-fu, part of which was taken up by my level 2 test. I passed! I didn't do as awesome as I had hoped, but I passed, and am now officially Level 2. Yay!

Also, Michael Clayton was a freakin' awesome movie.

Today: dim sum and more kung-fu tonight.

So I spent a lot of this past weekend talking about these books, but I'm gonna do it one more time. Over the past week I devoured two books by Deanna Raybourn, Silent in the Grave and Silent in the Sanctuary. And they were so, so good. A little heavy handed with the thesaurus at times, but I was thoroughly charmed by the characters and absolutely compelled by the stories.

And now I really wish I had a modicum of talent for writing, because I'd love to write a thrilling historical novel. I truly lack any kind of creativity whatsoever, but it would be really fun. I'm now reading Raybourn's blog, and the idea of doing all kinds of research and then writing a book sounds so neat. You'd think that someone who spent her entire life with her nose in a book would have picked up some writing skills.

So that's that. This weekend was fun, even though I did imbibe a bit too much yesterday in boozeahol. Also, Drew is the bestest and I have a usb turntable coming to me! I'm super excited to get all my vinyl into mp3s. And then I can burn non-iTunes music onto cds for people! I know y'all want your very own copy of the 1998 Sub Pop Singles Club.

The New Kids on the Block are rumored to be getting back together. Hee. There is no way Joey MacIntire can sing Didn't I Blow Your Mind This Time now that he has testosterone.

So, you know you had a good weekend when your voice is almost gone for two days because you talked too freakin' much all weekend. Good times, people, good times.

I've been meaning to post this link for a while but keep forgetting. Now I am remembering! Fantasy Congress! I haven't actually done anything on the site yet, but it looks like fun.

Also, did someone leave a white winter hat at our place a couple of weekends ago?

What a satisfying weekend experience. Friday night had people over for Rock Band, which was freakin' awesome, as usual. Saturday we spent the day shopping for presents, which was full of the hassle you'd expect from shopping a few weeks before Christmas, but it was pretty successful. We ended our shopping trip with a stop at Omaha Steaks. Obtained delicious steaks and set ourselves up with a tasty steak dinner of wilted spinach, steak, and roasted potatoes. Those steaks are totally worth the price.

I actually have recipes for another delicious steak dinner that we had last week, I'll be posting that and some cookie recipes over at [info]jennie_cooks.

Today: errands, cookies and Christmas cartoons at [info]tenillypo's, and now to wind down with the new issue of the Buffy comic.

Also, Rock Band is the greatest video game ever.

Weekend!

Oct. 9th, 2007 | 12:21 pm

Weekend wrap-up:

Friday: MeFi meetup at Watch City in Waltham. Good folks, tasty food, good times! I had onion rings. They made me go NOM NOM NOM.

Saturday: After getting up for an 8 AM dentist appointment (no waiting! clean teeth!), I ran around making food and cleaning the house for [info]aquarianna6's baby shower. Cute baby clothes! Tasty food! Good company! It was very fun. I was exhausted after, but ran down to Central Square to meet up for some dinner at a Chinese place. Mmmmm.... scallion pancake.

Sunday: Book Club meeting, then a visit with the lady counterpart of [info]thiswakingdream. Afterward Drew & I finished watching season 1 of 30 Rock. *love* that show. I am Liz Lemon, minus the comedic genius but also minus the dreadful love life. So basically, I love food and say/do embarrassing things a lot.

Monday: To celebrate the day off, I: did groceries, did laundry, spent money at Costco and Target, and continued The Quest for something to wear to this weekend's nuptials. I finally found a reasonably cute dress at H&M and an awesome pair of shoes at Macy's. So I will be outfitted in a somewhat classy manner. Despite being completely wiped out at the end of all this, I managed to pull it together to hit kung-fu last night, and endured the twice-weekly peril of pick a partner. Let me share with you the dread that fills my heart at the end of every kung-fu class. First, we are told to pick a partner for self-defense (sometimes with the qualification of "about your height" which for me is "no one"), which makes me feel like an awkward chubby kid in fifth grade waiting to be picked for kickball. Second, it involves strangers touching me and invading my personal space. *shudder* I have not yet gotten over this. I also don't like strange guys coming too close to the girls, if you know what I mean. It's awkward. Finally, it also involves being admonished for not looking my partner in the eye. I have a major problem with making eye contact while being aggressive, and this is most difficult for me. So sometimes I deal with it and sometimes I duck out of class a few minutes early to avoid dealing with it. To be fair, sometimes I also duck out of class early because self-defense often doesn't start until 8:55, at which point I just want to go home (class supposedly ends at 8:40, but never does).

That's my story.

I love long weekends! So I passed my first-level kung-fu test on Saturday, and after a 2.5 hour workout, I'm surprised I was able to stay awake for as long as I did Saturday night. I'd like to thank my good friend Pabst Blue Ribbon for its assitance with that. Saturday was the always fun annual Yankee Swap. The rest of the weekend I spent my time lolling about reading, organizing Drew's Magic cards, and doing chores. I am a barrell of fun!

Jul. 11th, 2005 | 09:55 am

Ah, summer weekends, how I love thee. Thursday night we did Trivia Night at the Newtowne Grille in Porter Square. I seriously thought that the place would be so sketcy and townie that we would have a lock on first place, but alas, for other young post-collegiates also thought the same thing. One of our teams came in 4th, though, which is something. I am so loving the idea of doing our own trivia nights at our place once the kegorator is up and running.

Friday night Drew & I used a gift card we had for Vinny Testa's to get a mostly-free dinner, then we headed to the theater for War of the Worlds. I actually really liked the movie, but then again, most of you know I have horrible taste in movies anyway. I was terrified and clutching onto Drew's arm for most of it. It helps that aliens are my number two fear, second only to spiders (I guess that's good, as spiders are actually real, and aliens are… probably not all that real. But I'm gullible! And easily led to believe crazy conspiracy theories! It's one of my charms!). That night I had a post-apocalyptic nightmare that the city was burning down, not because of aliens, but because a rum factory in town exploded. I don't even know if rum is even made in factories, but the dream was scary and involved a lot of running around and eventually having to kill a man, 'cause, you know, he was trying to take my stuff.

Saturday we enjoyed a loverly bbq in celebration of [info]cosmicserpent's birthday. There were sausages and meats, and some friends announced that they just got engaged. The Old Married Club is expanding. Yesterday was completely given over to laziness and lolling about. So that was that.

Jun. 27th, 2005 | 12:09 pm

I feel so healthy. Lunch is a turkey sammich with baby spinach and tomato on whole wheat/flaxseed bread, and a nectarine. If there's to be pool-ifying in my near future, I'd best get rid of some of my beer, pasty and cupcake pudge for my cute H&M swimsuit.

Oh, ew. I just noticed that my sunburn on my delicate bosomy parts is starting to peel, and that is really quite gross. And now I just shared that with you all. I loaded on the sunscreen before leaving for our Harbor Islands adventure yesterday, but I probably should have reapplied some in the afternoon.

So yeah, this weekend was fun and hot, and... seriously hot. I think we're going to have to rig up a temporary night-time bunny headquarters in our bedroom with the AC if things keep going this way. The poor things are looking really listless and unhappy in the heat.

May. 9th, 2005 | 12:08 pm

So tonight I have my Egyptian Cooking class. It promises to be interesting. It appears that it starts at 6:30, not 6, so I guess after I hit the gym I'll be spending some quality time at John Harvard's with a book (finished Sarum this weekend, onto [info]starflow's copy of London).

This weekend was possibly the laziest weekend I've had in a long, long time. Which is good, as the next month or so is going to be super busy. Boston folks should not forget that Neil Hamburger is this weekend! There was brunch at Kelly's (fireapple and [info]eclecticavatar, I saw you guys there, and tried to make eye contact to say hi, but was supremely out of it and didn't want to interrupt you). There was way too much watching of The Show That Will Not Be Named. There was delivery Indian food. There was Turkish Star Wars. That about sums it up.

I saw an ad in the paper today for extras for a ...And You Will Know Us By the Trail of Dead video shoot at the Middle East tomorrow. To be considered you have to send in a headshot. How indie rock is that?!

So aside from Friday night's little "adventure," this weekend was great. Sat. night we trekked to Brookline for [info]gatz's birthday. Yesterday I had a really long girls' brunch. It's been way to long since I've seen those folks, must be social with them more often. Oh, and the new Family Guy episode totally rocked. I'm very unsure about American Dad, it just doesn't quite hit my funnybone the right way.

You know what sucks? Trying to get to JP and ending up in Newton.

You know what fucking sucks ass? Trying to get home from JP and ending up in Mattapan and then the back roads of Roxbury. After midnight.

JP, you and I are not going to be cool for a while.

The worst part of the drive, though: seeing two or three lights in a weird formation in the sky ahead of us. The lights kind of twirled, then blinked out. I swear to god, if we hadn't been so lost I would have lost my shit right there. I was convinced it was a ufo. Then a minute later, about 200 yards from us I saw weird lights again, this time they kind of fizzled down, and I realized it was just some jackass setting off firecrackers.

Thank god for Patriot's Day, this weekend came and smacked me upside the head. Having this day off is so nice.

Friday night and all day Saturday I volunteered for Beer Summit. Come inside the cut for ranty time )

So that was Beer Summit. I'm done pulling the Iron Man for that, though. I'll be happy to volunteer for a session or two (especially at Oktoberfest, since that involves tips), but I'm not sacrificing a weekend to it anymore.

Yesterday I had a lovely brunch with [info]tenillypo, [info]mrs_muffin, and [info]aquarianna6.

Today I'm going to do groceries, clean the apartment, try to hire a maid, and hang out with the bunnies. Man, that "hire a maid" part sounds so bourgeois.

Man, I hate turning down Evites, and I just had to turn down 2 fabulous events. These next 2 weekends are absolutely full to the brim for me. Beer Summit is this weekend, so that pretty much kills anything else that could happen. Though I do have Patriots Day off next Monday, so that's good. Have to head up to Maine the next weekend. I really need to visit my dad, and maybe feel like I'm contributing something to this wedding, since I haven't done much at all yet. My book is so good, I just want work to end so I go back to reading about the Viking invasion of England. Hee. It's helped to fix my mind's timeline about pre-Middle Ages Europe, which prior this, was a bit fuzzy. This author has also written huge books about the history of London and Russia, which will be next on my list. Hooray for nerdy historical fiction!

Apr. 11th, 2005 | 08:18 am

Such a lovely weekend. I could close my eyes and pretend it was the middle of summer. Friday night we tikied ([info]dirtymikesell, the Tiki Room is just not the same without you!), then headed to Jillian's. We had pool-playing intentions, but never actually got around to playing, as sitting and talking was already a boatload of fun. Drinking and talking is a good activity.

Saturday Drew & I stayed in, as we were out late Friday and were feeling lazy. I did manage to head out to the Brighton Petco and Starmarket for groceries, and can report that the Star there is cheaper than the one in Porter Square. It also has a better selection and is less crowded. Now I need to decide if it's worth the $9.50 to take a Zipcar out an extra hour each week for groceries and just go there from now on. The one in Porter has been an absolute zoo of late. Though farmers' market season will soon be here, and I can do all my veggie shopping there, so it may become a moot point.

Yesterday I met up with [info]tenillypo for lunch, and tried some new chicken salad that did not make it onto The List. My quest continues. Did some laundry, ran some errands. You would think all that running around would have tuckered me out, but sleep was elusive and annoyingly hard to come by last night. I also downloaded the Arcade Fire album that all the indie kids got their panties in a twitch about last year, and I must say, it is a fine slab of indie rock. I'd even say it's the best thing I've heard in a while.

So, out at dinner last night (India Castle! I *heart* Indian food so much) with [info]incandes_flower, [info]tenillypo, [info]aquarianna6, [info]ms_ntropy and others, we got on the topic of baby names. Someone suggested Frankenstein for a boy's name, and it's still making me collapse into a helpless puddle of giggles. Should we have a son, I think we are compelled to give him that as a middle name. Hee. Frankenstein.

I have been pranked several times here at work this morning, and each time have fallen for it hard.

Mar. 28th, 2005 | 08:06 pm

So we had a pretty good weekend, all things considered. My Sunday was spent on the couch recovering from Saturday, but all is well. Folks came over for Carnivale and chili on Friday. Saturday was the Beer Summit volunteer party. I think I've even managed to come out of my cooking funk. For a few weeks, most of my cooking really sucked, but I think after the chili, yesterday's frittata, and tonight's cajun chicken, I've de-slumped. Grendel is currently being a jerk and bugging Robocop. I'm really looking forward to seeing [info]incandes_flower and the rest of the Bates Girls posse later this week.

Mar. 14th, 2005 | 06:00 pm

Well, that was about as satisfying as a weekend can get. It involved a huge amount of lounging, and lounging is good.

Friday night we headed over to the Second Circle for tv and, um, camaraderie. Yay for camaraderie. Saturday Drew & I spent the day lazing about. I made 2 sad looking loaves of bread. They taste fine, they just didn't exactly rise much... or at all. Now that I think about it, though, I don't remember seeing bubbles in the sugar-water-yeast mix I made, so I think maybe the water wasn't warm enough. I need a thermometer for cooking stuff. Yesterday we hit the Galleria for a little shopping, then went to [info]komos's place to watch him brew.

And that was that. Next Sunday I'm seeing Slint again, and they will rock.

An AskMetafilter question reminded me of the greatness of Tullycraft, and I looked 'em up, and lo, I see that there's a new album in the works! Twee Pop!

Feb. 14th, 2005 | 01:55 pm

The weekend involved the usual going out and doing stuff. Had a very interesting girls' brunch at the East Coast Grill, their brunch is all spicy and full of unnecessary meats. We were so lazy on Saturday that we took a Zipcar out to go to a party in JP, as JP is simply too far away for us to stand the commute on the T. It was expensive laziness, but well worth it for the decreased hassle (though I suppose my horrid driving probably hassled poor [info]c_m_i more than it hassled me, even I'll admit that I was driving terribly that night).

I finally found a bag to replace my lame library conference bag. It's cute and red. I was expecting to get a much more expensive messenger bag, so with the money I saved, I got a copy of The Fiery Furnances' "EP," which is quite good. I love jangly indie pop.

So, I just signed up to host a library student for SLA's Host-A-Student-Day. It's so weird to me that I'm actually a read adult professional. Speaking of, I should really get cracking on some research I have looming over me right now.

[info]komos deserves some huge thanks for always being willing to cart our carless asses home after a late night at the Second Circle.

The Superbowl was enjoyable, the food everyone brought was fantastic, and I am still sleepy from a fun Sunday night out. Friday we had folks over for Carnivale, which, as always, was a good time. That's about it.

Jan. 31st, 2005 | 02:12 pm

Our wedding invitations arrived today. It's very surreal to see one's name on a wedding invitation. Especially when one was the president and founder of the "No Marriage Club," and used to rail against the institution of marriage.

My weekend went down as [info]c_m_i describes it, except instead of geeking to computer games yesterday I was running errands, reading the stack of Cook's Illustrateds that [info]aquarianna6 lent me, and baking cookies. I'm also reading The Blind Assassin, but it's not nearly as good as the last 2 Atwood books I've read. Oh, I'm also reading Word Freak, about competitive Scrabble players, and it's good, but also not completely engrossing. Of course, I'm also in the middle of a handful of history books that I've been distracted away from.

I did our taxes this weekend, and am very pleased to see that I can expect large sums of money shortly. Yay for large sums of money!

Jan. 23rd, 2005 | 10:11 am

My feet are still killing me. Had a fun time volunteering at Beer Summit, as usual. Not fun, though, is closing early and kicking 600 loud and cranky drunks out an hour early so that we could clean up and leave before 11, as roads were supposed to be closed by 11. This is one hell of a blizzard. 22 years in Maine, a few in Boston, and I've never seen anything like this in my life.

Now to spend all day curled up on the couch with tea and books. I really wish I hadn't waited until today to do laundry, 'cause, well, that's just not happening. Almost done with Oryx and Crake (and I think I owe a shout-out to [info]cayetana for mentioning both that and The Red Tent recently, as that and Margaret Atwood have been fabulous reading material as of late). [info]spacedthekeys, you should look for Oryx and Crake, I think it would up your alley.

Well, I had a big weekend of doing absolutely nothing. Well, that's not entirely true. I lost 5 whole dollars on Friday night, because I totally suck at poker. But it was fun. Saturday, Drew & I braved the snow for a trip down to the South Shore to spend gift certificates. I got a shiny new crockpot, and our dinner is currently crockpotting away right now, so as to be ready when we get home. Then we vegged out completely. Yesterday involved even greater sloth, but it also involved Dodgeball, Anchorman and Carnivale. That's... well, that's about it.

So, we had a weekend there, didn't we?

Friday night we celebrated [info]bushidokelt's birthday at Boston Beer Works, where I made many a drunken call-out to [info]jawalter, challenging him and his Spread. We're in a Spread War. Heh. And yes, [info]theamazingjb totally kicked my ass in a "drinking contest."

Saturday we headed out to Waltham to see Sideways with Catherine & Brian. Loved the movie, really want to learn more about wine now. Am also insanely coveting C&B's house. Wow!

Yesterday I was in high putter-mode, and did groceries, laundry, baked cookies for the landlord, wrote out some Christmas cards, and roasted a pork tenderloin. I am a domestic goddess. Uh...

Still on the hunt for some place that has the frickin' dress I need to try on for the wedding. Gah! There is no place in New England that has the damn thing in stock. At this point I'm going to have to convince my dad to order it online sight unseen, and if it doesn't fit, send it back.

Last night one of my favorite Christmas specials was on. The one with the mice and the clock and the singing... Tee-hee.

This past weekend was very, very lazy. Had a fabulous time at the Second Circle Yankee Swap party. So fabulous that by the end of the night, I was sleeping on [info]jawalter's bed. It was late, and I was sleepy. On Saturday, Drew & I spent the entire day watching movies. Seriously, all day. Bubba Ho-Tep, Elf, and Envy were amusing, Chronicles of Riddick was... not exactly my cup of tea, and OutFoxed was anger-inducing. Sunday we ran errands and were super-productive around the house. It's nice to have weekends like that once in a while.

Uh, still groggy. Had the strangest hard-to-wake-up-from dream this morning. It started with me being back in college, working at the library, seeing all sorts of folks I haven't seen/thought of in so long. But I wasn't me from then, I was me from now, as I was catching up with people and telling them I'm engaged and talking about the bunnies. Then I went home, and it was my old house, where, for some reason, I was listening to a Haitian radio station and drinking Dunkin Donuts coffee. Then I was on a beach with Drew and Jessica Simpson, because Jessica Simpson was trying to show us her husband's new house, which was in a cave on the beach. Um, yeah.

Now I'm reading The Note and The Hill online and thinking too much about politics.

The weekend was quite, quite good. There was a party and some comedy and a movie. Next weekend there are so many movies to see! So many! Who's with me for Bridget Jones? Hugh Grant and Colin Firth! There's also SpongeBob, and National Treasure (which does demand hidden flasks of booze, as it'll be an enormous crapfest).

I need to stay away from Peanut Butter Cups. Seriously. I have a problem.

Never underestimate the comfiness of hanging about the house in a bathrobe.

That said, had a very fine weekend that saw the return (for good and temporarily) of some friends, and had a lovely phone call with [info]halninek this evening. Stuff of various kinds was done, and lo, it was fun.

Apparently I owe Hollywood Express a fine in excess of $100 for Twisted. For the love of all that's holy, I could've kept the damn thing and bought them a new copy for $15. We'll see how this plays out. They are seriously not getting that much money for that crapfest. Seriously. I returned the case, unknowingly leaving the dvd ensconced in the dvd player. I am smrt. I must have given them my home phone number instead of my cell when I signed up, which also meant that I never got any messages they left, since we don't check our home voice mail (note to anyone who might have that number- don't ever leave us a message there). Oy.

There is a hilarious remix of Ashlee Simpson's "performance" on SNL that has her doing the ho-down to the Benny Hill theme. Priceless.

Pumpkin cake in the oven on a fall day is among the best things ever. Walked all over creation today to obtain litter for the bunnies, but it was gorgeous out, so it was well worth the trouble. I think fall makes up for miserable New England winters; it's such a sensual time, so many smells and sounds and sights all popping out.

There's a John Wilkes Boothe special on tv, and it reminds me of the "It Wasn't Me" JWB montage. Heh.

Apologies to [info]cosmicserpent and [info]starflow for sucking out on the plan to go dancing last night. I left the Beer Summit volunteer thingy to come home for dinner, and my limbs were too heavy with sleep to get it together to head out again. I haven't been sleeping well lately, but that's not a great excuse.

Yesterday I did manage, though, to find The Dress. Now I'm a little kurfuzzled, as The Dress is way more expensive than I had hoped (even on discount web sites), and I'm not sure if it's within my dad's price range. We'll see. It's very purty.

I also owe some kudos to [info]tenillypo for lending Good Omens to me. I'm not terribly far into it, but so far it's amazingly good. Thanks!

*happy sigh* I've been experimenting with curries lately. Tonight's was too soupy, but Thursday's was right-on. I've also been experimenting with setting the damn house on fire. Friday night I learned that wax paper, when next to a hot burner, will catch fire. I also learned that my reflexes in such a situation aren't so great, as I just yelled for Drew, then said "fire," and "water." Drew put out the flames. Good lord. It was a good thing I stayed away from the stove all day yesterday. Also met up with [info]cosmicserpent and [info]starflow before hitting the Butterknife show.

Yesterday we ventued up to Vermont/Western MA for some farmy good times. [info]cayetana's sister-in-law put together a great day for the bunch of us, that was the best way to ease into fall. We visited a cheese cave (which is more like a Hobbit house than a cave... yes, I was expecting a drippy dark cave more than a well-controlled basement), a cider farm, and The People's Pint. The Pint was awesome; such good food, all local and organic, and fantastic beer. It was such a great day. By the time we got home we just crashed, and I'm still a wee bit tired from the trip. Spent all day today lazing around. Ran some errands, checked out the new bookstore in Porter Square (it so happens that one of Jeremy's friends, Josh, works there, so it was nice to see a familiar face). The bookstore hasn't received all of its inventory yet, so the shelves are a bit bare, but I'm so happy to have a real, not Buck-a-Book, bookstore in the neighborhood. Drew & I then headed to John Harvard's to read our books and have a few beers. I'm hoping tomorrow brings some quality girl time and more relaxing.

My favorite line thus far from the new Daily Show book: "If 'pro' is the opposite of 'con', then isn't Congress the opposite of progress? Or did we just fucking blow your mind?!?" Tee-hee.

This weekend was, as usual, pretty great. In fact, I haven't had a "do-over" weekend in quite some time. *knocks on wood* Thursday I sat through most of a baseball game with surprising patience, but they lost me by the 8th inning. Had the dorkiest fangirl moment ever when I saw Mary Lou Lord busking in Park St. station on the way home. It involved a lot of blushing, giggling, and failing to look cool. Friday I learned that I'm either as tall as a short dwarf or a tall hobbit. Thanks, Tolkien. Saturday I tikied until I was too tired to tiki anymore. The Tiki DanceTM, however, has jumped the shark. It'll come back when it becomes retro-kitsch.

I'm psyched for this week, as I have a free lunch tomorrow with the West reps who will thank me for my patronage and probably give me more free stuff. I'm also going to the Pearl Jam concert tomorrow night. Wednesday I'm heading to Nelinet all day for a class on electronic serials cataloging. We'll see how happy I am about that when I've been sitting there for a few hours learning more cataloging.

This weekend was so kind to my wallet. Thank you, weekend. Friday night we grabbed 1/2 price dinner and $4 pitchers of PBR at Jacob Wirth's, then "Sky Captain..." Saturday was spent shilling beer at Oktoberfest. Well, I got to play Banker and was fielding change and big money instead of beer; that, coupled with my lack of a lip ring, meant that only 2 very persistent young men chased after me all night. They weren't as bad as the guy who wouldn't leave. Sheesh. I know we're all cool people, but this guy was kicked out of the building at the end of the night at least 5 times. Oktoberfest is awesome because people give us tips. Tips are awesome. I actually made money this weekend. Yesterday Drew & I took care of our various shopping needs (i.e. I bought groceries, he bought a computer game), then vegged out for the rest of the day.

I really want this book.

Weekends are fantastic!

Friday night we grabbed some dinner at Sunset Grill, then headed to O'Briens to hear my friend's band play. Incidentally- [info]komos, the guy who was on your car was said friend. I almost lost it with hysterics when [info]ms_ntropy pointed him out as "the guy on the car." One of the opening bands had guested on not only "Queer Eye for the Straight Guy," but also "Joan of Arcadia." Now that's something. They did, however, do a rocking cover of Hopelessly Devoted to You that pleased me.

Saturday I experienced some all-out girliness as I went with Tenille & Meg to David's Bridal to try on a plentitude of dresses. I wasn't really expecting anything to actually look decent on me, but there were two that looked quite spiffy. I'm not actually going to buy anything from them, as I can get similar styles elsewhere that are better quality. I'm still holding out for the super-hot dress, but can't seem to find a store in the area that has it for trying on. We then met up with folks for some sangria and beer, then headed off to try the new Indian restaurant in Harvard Square. We were squarely denied from Tamarind Bay, however, because some other group of 11 people stole my reservation. They came in about 5 minutes before we did, and when the guy asked if they were the party for "Jen," they said yes. Bastards. So instead we trotted down the street to India Castle and enjoyed tasty curries. A few beers at Peoples (the wee little bartender kept trying to hit on me!), and we called it a night.

Yesterday I continued being girly and went to a girls brunch at Zaftigs with a group of folks who I really don't see often enough. It looks like we'll be doing this once a month, which makes me very happy indeed. Did some groceries, then Drew & I headed over to [info]cosmicserpent's place for some poker. That was fun! Even though I lost, I only lost $2. I'm totally willing to do that again sometime.

Alright, enough of this. I suppose I should start working. 3 day work week!!

Well, [info]c_m_i encapsulates my weekend very well, but I would subsitute "watched Farscape with Tenille" for bunny cage stuff. But yes, it was a very pleasant and excellent weekend.

Now, inspired by [info]cayetana's post, I'm going to post a few upcoming shows I'd like to attend. I'm with ya on the Mitch Hedburg, V, but the rest is a bit too roughly punk for my indie rock self. But, I see that Le Tigre is playing, and the Twilight Singers (which involves, of course, Greg Dulli from the Afghan Whigs... the man -is- indie rock in such a raw sense, I can't miss him this time around), and my friend's band, the Punk Monkees this Friday at O'Briens. C'mon, folks, we should hit up Sunset prior to, and then anyone who wants to come with should come support a fun local band. They're very tight, a little more on the pop/rock side of things, but still, it'll be a fun time. And, um, *scuffles feet* Futher Seems Forever and Brandston are playing an all ages show at Axis next month. I love these bands. Like, in a very embarrassingly emo way; but I am afraid of the 13 year old emo kids who love Dashboard that will crowd around me. If anyone wants to come with me, I would be your best friend (and buy you a beer). It's early on a Sat. night, so it's not like it'll kill the night.... Oh, and I'm seeing Pearl Jam and Deathcab when they come to town, due to my brother's ticket generosity (if nothing else, I'm sure he'll bit at the Further & Brandston show, too. We Moore's like our punk poppy and our emo sappy).

First off, Happy Birthday to [info]c_m_i!!

This weekend was so fantastic. I am pleased.

Friday night we grabbed some dinner with Catherine & Brian, then saw Open Water. It's not so much scary as it is uncomfortable. 90 minutes of feeling squidgy.

Saturday, after our landlord came downstairs and puttered about with our plumbing, we met up with [info]komos and [info]wisdom_seeker for breakfast, then headed out to Leominster for a Birthday Pool Party. Pool parties are much fun. There was meat, pie, and cupcakes. Everyone loves cupcakes!

Yesterday Mere & Jeremy came down from Maine, so I spent the day with them, Tenille, and Meg & Allastair.

Yay!

Well, it was indeed a weekend. Wait- it was a good weekend!

Yesterday we hitched a ride with [info]komos, [info]wisdom_seeker and [info]jawalter to RI for a birthday/bbq bash at [info]alex_victory's place. It was really nice to see some folks I hadn't seen in a while. We then had a Providence Experience, which is on par with every frickin' time I go to Providence (i.e. various stages of "getting lost" occur), which did result in tasty dinner and relaxing with good conversation and beer. We sang a terribly inappropriate song over and over, and Drew taught us naive ones the meaning of some truly horrific pop-culture tidbits (I'm not sure if it counts as pop-culture, but it does count as horrific).

Saturday was consumed by the Beer Summit volunteer party, which was, as always, a blast. Now to feul my newfound Ali G Show obsession.... oh, HBO, you are my friend.

Friday, went out to dinner with some friends from an old job, which was quite nice. Planning annoyances notwithstanding, it ended up being a good night, as any night spent bar hopping with Drew tends to be (awwwwww).

Grens had once again escaped from her cage this morning, and was sitting on the box of hay munching happily when I poked my head in the room. She's a smart little rabbit.

Last night was so much fun! So much that I had pretty lost my voice by the end of it. Unfortunately for [info]c_m_i, it's back in full force today. ;)

So the aforementioned eye_abstains and I, along with [info]cosmicserpent, [info]starflow, Miss T, Meg, Allastair, Nat, Bryan, and Chris, enjoyed the fine hospitality of those lovely ladies at Coyote Ugly. We then went to the still-empty McGann's Pub for a while. I don't know how that place stays open, as it appears to have no clientele on Friday and Saturday nights. I swear this will be the last time I ever go to Coyote Ugly! Well, unless one of you all wins an open bar hour.

Very fun time.

I'm so darn healthy.

Breakfast= Kashi
Snack= cottage cheese
Lunch= banana, yogurt, pluot(!!)
+ workout at the gym
Snack= grapes

I'm sure none of you seriously care, but I'm feeling chatty. Boss is out sick (though may show up later).

I meant to add more detail about my weekend, which in theory started on Thursday. Butterknife totally rocked out, I thought you guys sounded tighter than ever. It was sweet. Friday night involved free drinks at Coyote Ugly and, um, more drinks elsewhere after that. No...more...tequila. Saturday was Day O' Recovery, and only involved cuddling on the couch and watching movies. Yesterday I spent a good deal of the afternoon shopping with Miss T, [info]ms_ntropy and [info]jawalter. There's a Gap Outlet in Watertown that's having a huge sale! It was marvelous. That's about it. So there.

Drew has the best ideas. Like when he says "you wanna go to New York?" and when I saw "now?" he says "why not."

Awesome. Totally awesome weekend. We rocked the city hardcore.

Ok, we have a serious fly situation in here that is just not good. I've been unsuccessfully swatting at them all night, and have little packets of mint and bay leaves lying around to ward them off. Ew, ew, ew. Flypaper is my number one priority for tomorrow. Bugs in the house feels like such an invasion.

Six Feet Under tonight totally redeemed itself from last week's pain.

Yesterday [info]c_m_i and [info]jawalter trekked up to Maine with me for a baseball game. Every summer, my dad buys tickets for everyone on his side of the family to go to a Portland Seadogs game together. My crazy aunt chatted me up and cornered me into giving her my email address. This is a woman who married my uncle, divorced him, married another guy, divorced him, then married my uncle again. She offered me her thrice used wedding dress, as I had said that I'm looking to be thrifty and unconventional. I avoided saying the obvious "no thanks, lady, that's a huge pile o' bad luck" by telling her that I'm looking for a blue or lavender dress. Yikes. Have I mentioned that I kind of, sort of, only a little bit, want to try on a white dress, just to see what it looks like? *shakes head* Only because I can't go dressed like a pirate. Drew's mom sent me a wedding magazine, and it most certainly reinforced my belief that the wedding industry is a scary, bloated business. I'm just not that kind of girl- I dreamt of being a rock star, not a pretty princess. The whole diamond thing boggles my mind, as I actually find them kind of tacky. But I do like the idea of throwing a kick ass party, and that's what we'll deliver. Plus, I am a bit of a romantic, underneath it all

Alright, time to finish the new David Sedaris book.

So this is what a Saturday really feels like...

Had a blast last night getting curry and then hitting the Tiki Room. I'm so glad you all could come out, I love the feeling of sitting at a huge table surrounded by such awesome peeps. I also love pina coladas. Sorry we jetted early, but I'm feeling so very rested and pleasant that I think it was well worth it to do so. Can I also say that I really hope this newfound feeling of financial security actually lasts, 'cause I really like that for the first time in my life I don't have to feel guilty about buying unnecessary extras at the grocery store, and may even be able to buy some unnecessary new cds.

Oh yeah, if you're interested in catching Anchorman for either the first or second time tomorrow, drop me a note so I know to include you on the planning.

Now I'm going to make pasta salad, chocolate banana bread and mango-banana frozen yogurt. I have a crapload of organic bananas to use up.

I'm so pleased with how this weekend turned out that I'm not even sad to be heading to work this morning. Friday night I succeeded in filling my needs for both delicious curry and hanging out. Saturday Drew & I headed up to my dad's wife's camp in Maine for some wholesome family barbeque time. My stepmom's family is just so normal and sincerely nice that it kind of weirds me out a bit. Or maybe it was the lack of beer at a barbeque. We got to dangle our feet in a pretty lake and see Lake Bunganut (heh). Thanks to the hospitality of [info]ms_ntropy and her mom, we got to bask in a pool, eat too much food, and have an excellent time with a bunch of excellent people on Sunday. I didn't even feel too squidgy about wearing my teeny-bopper bathing suit. Yesterday I killed a lot of brain cells, but not by drinking. Alan, Tenille and I had a little movie marathon wherein we watched The Perfect Score and Eurotrip; the former being a big old pile of crap, the latter being one of the most hilarious films I've seen in a while. I also made some super-tasty chocolate zucchini bread that might just be my new favorite thing ever. All in all, it was a solidly great weekend.

The last week or so before leaving a job is just so hard for focusing. I'm pretty checked out, but am still just as swamped with work as ever, so it doesn't even feel like I'm really leaving. I'm so excited for an actual 3 day weekend that I can enjoy without having to come in to work at all- plus it'll involve driving a car around, barbeques, swimming, and lounging about. Actually, this weekend will mark the one year anniversary of my relinquishing vegetarianism in favor of flaming chicken , tee-hee. To celebrate, I would suggest a trip to the Tiki Room, but my need for curry is so overpowering that instead I will ask if anyone would be interested in hitting Diva at some point (maybe Friday night?). Curry! That is, of course, if the guy who's said he wants to buy my tv shows up tonight and gives me some cash. Alright, back to the grind. Oh yeah, I also wanted to mention that Rancid's "?and out come the wolves" is perhaps the best album to listen to while going to work. Puts a smile on my little face.

Jun. 27th, 2004 | 05:46 pm

What a satisfying weekend. Friday night was spent with good company and lots of music. Yesterday we saw Fahrenheit 9/11 with Catherine & Brian and [info]bunnyroo and her man. There was a crazy lady outside the theater after the showing who was yelling about how much she hates Bush. Then she was going off about how Clinton wasn't so bad and started yelling "have sex, not war! have sex as many times as you want! Twice a day!" It was amusing. Then some people dressed as Revolutionary War-era folks (complete with a little drum!) came by with flyers about ousting our unelected President. Heh. I thought the movie did a good job of showing what appears to be incontrovertible evidence that the government has royally fucked up. The scenes from Iraq were horrific and gut-wrenching, which I also think is good for people to see, as the news only shows a very sanitized version of what's actually going on. We later met up with the A-Dot for dinner at Bukowskis and a showing of Napoleon Dynamite. Good lord, that movie is hilarious. I was in stiches the entire time. You must see it! Today we met up with Miss Tenille and [info]ms_ntropy for some lunch and Shrek2, which was also most enjoyable. I am content. Now I've got to wait for my brother to get back from the Sox game and try to convince him to give me a ride to the grocery store.
