On gray, wet, cold morning such as this, my morning commute music is often debatable. Do I want to wallow in the grayness with depressing music? Or fight it off with cheeriness? This morning I tried to construct for myself the ultimate, most irresistibly happy playlist. It did indeed chase away the gloom. And now I want more suggestions!
So what I'm looking for are songs that make it practically impossible to be glum. Not songs that make you happy because they are so good, or songs that remind you of good memories, but songs that exist on their own as gleeful little entities. ( What I listened to this morning )
In book-related thoughts- I'm reading Confessions of an Economic Hit Man, and I'm not quite sure what to make of it. Can it really be 100% true? It's detailing exactly the kind of "corporatocracy" that I believe exists, but to have it all spelled out as "this actually happened, I really did this" makes me wonder about the veracity of the source. Oh god, I'm such a librarian.

So I spent a lot of this past weekend talking about these books, but I'm gonna do it one more time. Over the past week I devoured two books by Deanna Raybourn, Silent in the Grave and Silent in the Sanctuary. And they were so, so good. A little heavy handed with the thesaurus at times, but I was thoroughly charmed by the characters and absolutely compelled by the stories.
And now I really wish I had a modicum of talent for writing, because I'd love to write a thrilling historical novel. I truly lack any kind of creativity whatsoever, but it would be really fun. I'm now reading Raybourn's blog, and the idea of doing all kinds of research and then writing a book sounds so neat. You'd think that someone who spent her entire life with her nose in a book would have picked up some writing skills.
So that's that. This weekend was fun, even though I did imbibe a bit too much yesterday in boozeahol. Also, Drew is the bestest and I have a usb turntable coming to me! I'm super excited to get all my vinyl into mp3s. And then I can burn non-iTunes music onto cds for people! I know y'all want your very own copy of the 1998 Sub Pop Singles Club.

Being all posty about shows, hows about a list of upcoming shows I'd like to go to, if anyone wants to keep me company?
April 3: Stephen Malkmus & the Jicks (Paradise)
April 20: Neil Hamburger You know you want more Neil Hamburger! (Middle East upstairs)
May 9: Clinic (Paradise)
And of course, there's Rush inFebruary July.
I'm reading Bill Bryson's "The Mother Tongue" right now; it's about the history of the English language. Really interesting, and chock full of neat factoids, but I'm put off by the organizational style of the book. In that, it doesn't feel like it has much organization. So I'm balancing it out with a light read about a Victorian lady solving murders with the help of a sexy mysterious stranger.
Also, Supernatural last night kicked some eff'n ass! What a great show. It brings me much joy.

Local bakery update (not cupcakes!): When Pigs Fly officially makes the best bread ever. Picked up a loaf of sundried tomato bread to go with our lasagna last night, and it's ridiculously tasty.
In sad non-local news, I've been informed that Burgers & Cupcakes has closed shop in New York. But I need it to exist so that once a year we can have one perfect day in New York. That perfect day involves: a heck of a lot of walking, reading books at Vol de Nuit with begian beers and french fries, and then dinner at Burgers & Cupcakes. I am a simple woman with simple needs, and a restaurant that serves only burgers and cupcakes is one of those needs.
Also, I've decided that I seriously need to read more books. Next year will be a year for reading books! I'm reading The Thirteenth Tale right now, which is entertaining enough. But it has reminded me that I never read Jane Eyre, and I think that needs to be rectified. There are a bunch of other "classic" type books that I need to actually read, too. I'm not sure if that will involve Ulysses or not.

Bookishness

I may have linked to this article in the past, but this article makes me jolly.
Seriously, the Outlander series is so good, I have yet to find anything else that compares. I'm totally going to have to re-read them again. Now I want to go to Scotland.
Also, there are huge ads up in the subway for some sort of electronic book reader device, and it says "sexier than a librarian." Bah. I am sexier than an electronic reading device! Besides, books smell good and look nice on your bookshelf. I just can't see Sony competing with that.

So I'm reading Them by Jon Ronson, thanks to Drew's recommendation, and it is awesomely entertaining. I am genuinely surprised by several things: 1) the number of different interpretations on the "New World Order" theme, 2) the number of people who appear to believe that a small secret group is controlling the world, and 3) that people honestly think any group of people is organized enough to actually carry out all the activities that the New World Order supposedly carries out. Dude. Sometimes it's an exercise in futility for a group of us to figure out dinner plans for one night. The book is really quite good, though.
Also, I have the sniffles.
Also, also Drew made peanut butter chocolate cupcakes this weekend and they are delicious. Take that, Kickass Cupcakes! Oh, and a cupcakery review: We tried the cupcakes at Modern Pastry this weekend (from the Medford location). Good, better than Kickass, but not great. The cake was moist and tasty, but the frosting was a bit too thick and definitely too sweet. Good size to price ratio, though. Lyndell's is still the winner, with a close second coming in from Joseph's Bakery in South Boston (my work often gets our cupcake treats for "First Fridays" from there).

So tonight I have my Egyptian Cooking class. It promises to be interesting. It appears that it starts at 6:30, not 6, so I guess after I hit the gym I'll be spending some quality time at John Harvard's with a book (finished Sarum this weekend, onto
starflow's copy of London).
This weekend was possibly the laziest weekend I've had in a long, long time. Which is good, as the next month or so is going to be super busy. Boston folks should not forget that Neil Hamburger is this weekend! There was brunch at Kelly's (fireapple and
eclecticavatar, I saw you guys there, and tried to make eye contact to say hi, but was supremely out of it and didn't want to interrupt you). There was way too much watching of The Show That Will Not Be Named. There was delivery Indian food. There was Turkish Star Wars. That about sums it up.
I saw an ad in the paper today for extras for a ...And You Will Know Us By the Trail of Dead video shoot at the Middle East tomorrow. To be considered you have to send in a headshot. How indie rock is that?!

Man, I hate turning down Evites, and I just had to turn down 2 fabulous events. These next 2 weekends are absolutely full to the brim for me. Beer Summit is this weekend, so that pretty much kills anything else that could happen. Though I do have Patriots Day off next Monday, so that's good. Have to head up to Maine the next weekend. I really need to visit my dad, and maybe feel like I'm contributing something to this wedding, since I haven't done much at all yet. My book is so good, I just want work to end so I go back to reading about the Viking invasion of England. Hee. It's helped to fix my mind's timeline about pre-Middle Ages Europe, which prior this, was a bit fuzzy. This author has also written huge books about the history of London and Russia, which will be next on my list. Hooray for nerdy historical fiction!

Current readings: Ex-Libris, which Drew says really wants to be The Name of the Rose but fails. I'm enjoying it, it involves history and a mystery. Not enough bodice-ripping for my taste, but it'll do. It's no Eco, that's for sure, but it is entertaining. Also reading The Man Who Ate Everything. I am loving this book, but then again, I love most books about food. I could with a little less of the guy's snobbery against picky eaters, but it's chock full of learnin' and funny stories and interesting facts. I just will never understand why anyone would care about other people's pickiness. So I don't want to eat fish, foie gras, and cute woodland critters. I don't see why anyone other than me (ok, and Drew, since I do the cooking and my pickiness rules our dinners) would care what goes in my belly. Also finished The Time Traveler's Wife a week or so ago, and loved it. Very nice piece of fluff reading, complete with a tear-inducing ending. Good stuff.
Robocop didn't eat his breakfast this morning, and was crouched in the back of his cage. I'm starting to get worried about the little guy. He was totally fine yesterday.

I've been quiet recently, as nothing really major is going on. Just living my little day-to-day life. Monday Drew gave me a rose, just to make me happy. Have I mentioned lately how wonderful he is?
Just finished reading A Confederacy of Dunces, which was a fabulous read. Moving on to How to Make Love Like a Porn Star by Jenna Jameson. This is one tricksy book to read on the subway, there are lots of pictures.

Our wedding invitations arrived today. It's very surreal to see one's name on a wedding invitation. Especially when one was the president and founder of the "No Marriage Club," and used to rail against the institution of marriage.
My weekend went down as
c_m_i describes it, except instead of geeking to computer games yesterday I was running errands, reading the stack of Cook's Illustrateds that
aquarianna6 lent me, and baking cookies. I'm also reading The Blind Assassin, but it's not nearly as good as the last 2 Atwood books I've read. Oh, I'm also reading Word Freak, about competitive Scrabble players, and it's good, but also not completely engrossing. Of course, I'm also in the middle of a handful of history books that I've been distracted away from.
I did our taxes this weekend, and am very pleased to see that I can expect large sums of money shortly. Yay for large sums of money!

My feet are still killing me. Had a fun time volunteering at Beer Summit, as usual. Not fun, though, is closing early and kicking 600 loud and cranky drunks out an hour early so that we could clean up and leave before 11, as roads were supposed to be closed by 11. This is one hell of a blizzard. 22 years in Maine, a few in Boston, and I've never seen anything like this in my life.
Now to spend all day curled up on the couch with tea and books. I really wish I hadn't waited until today to do laundry, 'cause, well, that's just not happening. Almost done with Oryx and Crake (and I think I owe a shout-out to
cayetana for mentioning both that and The Red Tent recently, as that and Margaret Atwood have been fabulous reading material as of late).
spacedthekeys, you should look for Oryx and Crake, I think it would up your alley.

We're back. Survived the blizzard that's currently raging outside- let me tell ya, it should not take 4 hours to get from Freeport, Maine to Somerville, MA. Had a good time up at my dad's, read most of The Red Tent, saw Spanglish, wherein Adam Sandler again proves that he really can act, and lazed about.
Now- mostly unpacked, tired, and going to be kicking back with some wine and some brainless tv. I am so not looking forward to getting up early tomorrow to drive the car back to the rental place in Harvard Square.

Meh, meh, meh. My head is achey from thinking too hard about how to find an answer to a reference question that is mind-numbingly difficult.

Pumpkin cake in the oven on a fall day is among the best things ever. Walked all over creation today to obtain litter for the bunnies, but it was gorgeous out, so it was well worth the trouble. I think fall makes up for miserable New England winters; it's such a sensual time, so many smells and sounds and sights all popping out.
There's a John Wilkes Boothe special on tv, and it reminds me of the "It Wasn't Me" JWB montage. Heh.
Apologies to
cosmicserpent and
starflow for sucking out on the plan to go dancing last night. I left the Beer Summit volunteer thingy to come home for dinner, and my limbs were too heavy with sleep to get it together to head out again. I haven't been sleeping well lately, but that's not a great excuse.
Yesterday I did manage, though, to find The Dress. Now I'm a little kurfuzzled, as The Dress is way more expensive than I had hoped (even on discount web sites), and I'm not sure if it's within my dad's price range. We'll see. It's very purty.
I also owe some kudos to
tenillypo for lending Good Omens to me. I'm not terribly far into it, but so far it's amazingly good. Thanks!

My favorite line thus far from the new Daily Show book: "If 'pro' is the opposite of 'con', then isn't Congress the opposite of progress? Or did we just fucking blow your mind?!?" Tee-hee.
This weekend was, as usual, pretty great. In fact, I haven't had a "do-over" weekend in quite some time. *knocks on wood* Thursday I sat through most of a baseball game with surprising patience, but they lost me by the 8th inning. Had the dorkiest fangirl moment ever when I saw Mary Lou Lord busking in Park St. station on the way home. It involved a lot of blushing, giggling, and failing to look cool. Friday I learned that I'm either as tall as a short dwarf or a tall hobbit. Thanks, Tolkien. Saturday I tikied until I was too tired to tiki anymore. The Tiki DanceTM, however, has jumped the shark. It'll come back when it becomes retro-kitsch.
I'm psyched for this week, as I have a free lunch tomorrow with the West reps who will thank me for my patronage and probably give me more free stuff. I'm also going to the Pearl Jam concert tomorrow night. Wednesday I'm heading to Nelinet all day for a class on electronic serials cataloging. We'll see how happy I am about that when I've been sitting there for a few hours learning more cataloging.

This weekend was so kind to my wallet. Thank you, weekend. Friday night we grabbed 1/2 price dinner and $4 pitchers of PBR at Jacob Wirth's, then "Sky Captain..." Saturday was spent shilling beer at Oktoberfest. Well, I got to play Banker and was fielding change and big money instead of beer; that, coupled with my lack of a lip ring, meant that only 2 very persistent young men chased after me all night. They weren't as bad as the guy who wouldn't leave. Sheesh. I know we're all cool people, but this guy was kicked out of the building at the end of the night at least 5 times. Oktoberfest is awesome because people give us tips. Tips are awesome. I actually made money this weekend. Yesterday Drew & I took care of our various shopping needs (i.e. I bought groceries, he bought a computer game), then vegged out for the rest of the day.
I really want this book.

Am home sick today. Given that when I left the office yesterday, my boss said "see you Thursday," I feel no guilt. Plus, am actually pretty sick for real. But I've got tea, will read more of "Guns, Germs & Steel," will do laundry, and will in all hopes be better by this evening, as I'd like to be social, though I'm not sure exactly what that being social will entail. Beer Club is at Rock Bottom, and I do so love the Rock Bottom. I really want to see Garden State and am considering going to that, it's actually playing at the Boston Common theater now....

Ok, we have a serious fly situation in here that is just not good. I've been unsuccessfully swatting at them all night, and have little packets of mint and bay leaves lying around to ward them off. Ew, ew, ew. Flypaper is my number one priority for tomorrow. Bugs in the house feels like such an invasion.
Six Feet Under tonight totally redeemed itself from last week's pain.
Yesterday
c_m_i and
jawalter trekked up to Maine with me for a baseball game. Every summer, my dad buys tickets for everyone on his side of the family to go to a Portland Seadogs game together. My crazy aunt chatted me up and cornered me into giving her my email address. This is a woman who married my uncle, divorced him, married another guy, divorced him, then married my uncle again. She offered me her thrice used wedding dress, as I had said that I'm looking to be thrifty and unconventional. I avoided saying the obvious "no thanks, lady, that's a huge pile o' bad luck" by telling her that I'm looking for a blue or lavender dress. Yikes. Have I mentioned that I kind of, sort of, only a little bit, want to try on a white dress, just to see what it looks like? *shakes head* Only because I can't go dressed like a pirate. Drew's mom sent me a wedding magazine, and it most certainly reinforced my belief that the wedding industry is a scary, bloated business. I'm just not that kind of girl- I dreamt of being a rock star, not a pretty princess. The whole diamond thing boggles my mind, as I actually find them kind of tacky. But I do like the idea of throwing a kick ass party, and that's what we'll deliver. Plus, I am a bit of a romantic, underneath it all
Alright, time to finish the new David Sedaris book.

Well, the interview...happened. I'm entirely unsure what to make of it. The library director seems to enjoy talking, as he monopolized most of the interview. He asked me questions, but then every answer I gave sent him down on a tangent. He said his only concern is that the job seems to be so similar to what I do now that it would basically be the same job in a different location- I tried to explain that it would actually be a big step up for me, as it's a professional position, and it involves more responsibilities than what I currently have. Try doing that while at the same trying to sound like you're competent enough to do the new job. I couldn't really get a good read off of him, but I don't know if that's good or bad, as the last time I thought I had a good read on the sitch it didn't go down the way I expected. Hrm. We'll wait and see. It sounds as if they want to move super fast, as the woman who currently holds the job is moving to Wisconsin on Friday. Oh yeah, he also said something about my lip ring, but I don't think it's too bad- he said he didn't care about, but wasn't sure about HR's policy (so obviously, I said if it had to go, it would certainly go), and he said he'd worked with people with piercings before and I was definitely dressed far more conservatively than they were.
I then killed time downtown for a few hours before my dermatologist appointment- ran in
cayetana in H&M (though I had just eaten a sandwich and had super-stinky breath, so if I looked sketchy, I was just trying not to breathe on you!). Not liking the hot summer fashions so much, as they involve colors that are far too bright for me.
I am so obsessed with the book I'm reading- "The Eight" by Katherine Neville.

I don't realize how constantly rushed and pressured I feel during a normal day, and a day without any timetable, schedule, or places to be was so relaxing. We hit the museum (free thanks to Fleet bank), had a leisurely lunch on an outside patio, rambled about the town, stopped in touristy shoppes, and visited a friendly little bar where a stranger started talking to us because of the book I was reading ("Kitchen Confidential," which I'll probably finish within a day, I can't put it down).
I just made a tasty dinner, and am going to chill with a book and the bunnies.
Feeling so very content.

Thus far, I'd say this weekend has been quite, quite loverly.
Friday night had dinner at Rock Bottom with
c_m_i,
philbot and
cayetana. Drew & I then headed to Jacob Wirth's (still not closed!), not intending to stay all that long, however, when they started taking out songbooks and the piano player started playing, we got caught up in the sing-along. It was soooo much fun! That's the kind of bar atmosphere I love, when everyone gets to the point where tables of strangers are shouting back and forth at each other, people are singing cheesy songs, and there's a feeling of warmth. I also have a weird thing about loving to hear Sweet Caroline in bars, especially when people are singing along. So we left some drunken messages for people to share the goodwill.
Saturday night was spent in the splendiferous company of the lovely
ms_ntropy and A-Dot. We tikied it up big time, and then headed to that bar in Brookline that has a wide variety of beers. They had $2 PBRs, and that was all I needed. That was the best way to celebrate the V-Day.
Yesterday was pretty much a day of recouping from Saturday's late-night shenanigans. Drew painted his little guys, I plowed through 300 pages of my new book, which is really entertaining ("The Other Boelyn Girl").
Now I'm waiting for the little Moore to show up, as my brother is coming to town. We'll probably go see a movie later, I'll post when we figure out what it'll be, in the event that any of you folks might be interested in joining us. We may also check out the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum or the ICA, as I've been to the MFA but neither of those.

What has Jenny been up to?
Well, after a harsh day of workin' for The Man on Wednesday, I enjoyed a lovely dinner with a big bunch of excellent people. New Years Eve ended up being much more low-key than last year, but then again, I don't think many more New Years' will top that one.
Thursday... I don't think I did much all day, but went out to get very tasty but very sloooow Japanese/Korean food with
komos and
wisdom_seeker and then hit the Burren that night to see another big bunch of excellent people. Much fun, much Pabst. I enjoyed talking with
dirtymikesell about the girls at the bar.
Friday involved watching Drew play with his Christmas presents and brewing 2 batches of beer. That and playing video games.
Saturday night
philbot and
cayetana made us awesome food. It was great to meet a couple of new people, and have slightly tipsy conversations about Catholic school. We then headed to Cornwall's for darts (well, I didn't play darts, as I started talkin' and talkin' and hiccuping).
Today we helped
komos brew more beer. Now I'm sleepy and content.
So, in sum, this long weekend involved a lot of beer and good people (those not already mentioned who were part of some or many of the festivities:
ms_ntropy,
jawalter,
cook_ting,
cosmicserpent,
bushidokelt, basha,
theamazingjb,
alex_victory,
kayranord,
morallybass and
vestalvixen, and of course,
c_m_i. Yaaaaaay!!!
Now I'm going to read a book about London history, coo at the bunnies some more, and then watch cartoons.

This weekend was quite lovely. Friday- went out for dinner and tea at a tea place in JP. I think I scared people away by giggling too loudly.
Saturday- spent all day at
komos's brewin' beer and hanging out. Very excellent.
Sunday- finished (almost) shopping!! Other than that, spent the day reading and vegging. I'm almost done Bringing Down the House, about the MIT kids who made a killing at Vegas.

Do you folks ever work?! Heh. Seriously, I have to admit that my livejournal and email time at lunch is what helps me remain sane for the rest of the day. Now if only they could get moving on the whole having your friends posts emailed to you thing. Life would be sweeeeeet.
Is it a sign of a problem that every dream I can remember for the past week has involved my bunnies in some way or another?
You know what I haven't mentioned yet? The fact that Drew gave me wonderful, excellent presents for Christmas this weekend. I am armed and ready with a digital camera, and now wish that I had thought to take it with me today, as I bet I could get some nice pictures after work of all the big buildings. That, and the Tiki Road Trip book!!!! Now everywhere I go I will know exactly where to find tiki joy. Except South Dakota, Vermont and Connecticut, which have no recorded instances of tiki bars existing.

I am sleepy. yawwwwn.
Last night Drew & I went to see The Last Samurai, which I enjoyed way more than I thought I would. There were ninjas.
I also bought yet another history tome, this time about the Carrolls of Maryland, as I remembered that I am somehow related to them, according to my dad. The only Irish Catholic to sign the Declaration of Independence.... sounds right to me.

Ok, I need to be cut off.
I just bought a book. And I shouldn't do that, seeing as how my pile o' stuff to read is growing by leaps and bounds.
But...but.... it's about TEMPLARS. I needed it.
There was also one about teenagers and emo, but I passed that up.
I have hot cocoa, it's not raining for the moment, and I've still got 20 minutes of lunch break left. I am feeling better.

Apologies to everyone who has

LONDON!
I just picked up some fine reading materials, covering two topics I enjoy quite a lot: feminist rants and political rants. Weighing in on the feminist side I've got Bitch and Bust, on the political side The Nation and The International Socialist Review. Now I'm debating whether I should bring the 2 books I'm currently in the middle of ("The Dante Club" and Al Franken's book) or if I should totally geek out and bring my heavy tome of the history of London. Jenny loves history. But it is heavy. Hmmm. I have a severe fear of boredom when traveling, 'cause what'cha gonna about it if you run out of interesting things to do when you're thousands of feet above the ground? Huh? Seriously, what are you going to do about it? I've also got my Gameboy, homework, music, and I'll probably buy a couple of newspapers for the crossword puzzles. That should be good.

Am feeling much better today, must've been the weather and screwy womanly hormones. It happens.
I am copy cataloging until my eyes bleed today.
Whoo-hoo?
And, whoa! I've been slowly wading through The Dante Club because I keep getting distracted by other books (or forget to bring books with me when I hit bars, thus having to buy more books, and thus perpetuating the cycle). But I remembered to bring it to the gym today, and um, ick. Though I think I'm getting to the part of the plot where it actually starts to move, which is good.

Last night was the Dave Attell/Lewis Black show. I think I laughed enough to add 10 years to my life. I was surprised to find out that I really, really enjoyed Dave and could have done with a little less Lewis (or that could be because all I wanted was water, the Orpheum had just stopped selling refreshing beverages right before his set, and Black proceeded to spend about 20 minutes on a bit about water). Pre-show I camped out at the bar at Fajitas & Ritas with the new Michael Moore book and waited for Drew,
synaesthesia and Tim (who probably has an LJ but I'm not sure) to show up. I sincerely enjoy sitting at bars and reading. The book's enjoyable, albeit with the usual Michael Moore "in your face" style that I would rather be toned down (if only because if he wrote a little better, or with less hyperbole, I think he would be taken more seriously). There's a bit in the introduction about kickass librarians fighting censorship, and it actually gave me a moment of librarian pride.
Whew. So Interpol tonight, then um, drinking somewhere TBD.

I found a book called "The Dewey Decimal System of Love." It's so poorly written that it's hilarious. But please, the 40 year old celibate, virginal librarian with her hair in a bun is so cliche. I want to read about punk rock librarians!

Happy Sigh.
So yestarday, after a long day of workin', I wasn't really ready to head home. So I headed to the Coop, bought a book that turns out to be Super Awesome and interesting(The Price of Dissent: Testimonies to Political Repression in America), and settled in at John Harvard's for some reading and people-watching. I was pretty pleased with myself, as I'd never gone into a bar by myself or at least without the express knowledge that people would be meeting me shortly. I tend to get self-conscious about going places alone, or at least places that people tend to go to with other people (like, getting lunch alone is ok, but going out to dinner alone sketches me. same with the movies). So I was pleased with my Independent Lady adventure. The bartender gave me free beers, too! I was later pleasantly surprised by a phone call from Drew, who had been gallavanting and enjoying his vacation. He came to join me, thus sealing a very satisfying night.

2 more weeks!!! Dance dance.
In other news, I am a fond supporter of Drew's tireless efforts to bring together cute animals and funny sayings. Those not reading his journal should check out: this
I'm also running out of ways to waste time on the internet and am sadly getting sucked into Friendster. Gah! My last week I'll probably bring a book in and just start reading. I'm in the midst of a good one right now- it fits my hankering for Scottish/Irish historical fiction without being too bodice-ripping and is written passably well enough. 'Tis called "Lion of Ireland." Though now that my books are packed up I actually want to get back to the tome of medieval European history...

I think the second interview went well yesterday. Met with the Dean of Education and felt very Adult. I asked a good question that got him talking for quite a while.
So I'm reading The Corrections, and I have to say, thus far, I'm terribly underwhelmed by it. I was expecting something...different. I want to keep at it in the hopes that it'll get better, as it got glowing reviews, but I swear if I read one more overwrought, unnecessary metaphor I'll throw the damn book across the room.
Suppose this is why I like historical fiction so much.

Wow, so apparantly my dad is getting married this summer. That's big news, but also happy news, as his girlfriend is super nice.
Big thanks to all who came out last night, it was a very enjoyable time! Sorry that the dancing place turned out to be sucky, you win some you lose some.
Had an excellent day today hanging around with
c_m_i. We saw Winged Migration, per
komos's suggestion, and it was a mighty fine film. It had lots of pretty birdies. Tenille met us for some tasty dessert products, then T. and I came home to read Harry Potter and relax.
So tomorrow I am off for my big adventure.
I will be in Portland, Oregon until Wednesday, at which point Meredith, Jeremy and I will drive down to Cali to Lucas and Christine's. Berkeley for a night, Davis for a night, and San Fran for a night, and then I shall return, completely broke and exhausted. Here's hoping it goes off without a hitch! See you all in a week!

So I think I'll be making my poor friends come pilgrammage with me to this place sometime next week:
Tiki Tiki Tiki
*shakes head*
Sometimes....I think I'm a little weird.
So I'm getting more excited for the trip, though I wish I weren't sick and had more money. But they're all just as broke as I am, so I think we'll be just fine with our sweet Pabsts and not much else.
Addendum: First, I am so needing this book
And then I must, someday, do a Tiki Road Trip. Maybe someday...maybe someday.

The book I'm reading now is So Good. The Company by Robert Littell.
It makes me want to be a spy, but, as was determined last night, I would be the world's worst spy. A propensity for gossip, complete lack of a poker face, inability to lie without laughing, and general wussiness in the face of danger do not a good spy make.
The fact that I just started a new book is to be especially celebrated because I actually waited until I finished the last one I was reading!
Last night's improv watching was Super-Great. It's been so long since I've seen improv. I laughed and laughed and laughed. They are damn funny people.
So this afternoon I have a meeting with an HR guy here at the B-School, just to talk about job search strategies and stuff.

So yesterday was quite a lovely day. Tenille and I had some seriously girly time, which included shopping. Which inevitably leads to oohing and aahing at Crate & Barrel, Williams Sonoma and Pottery Barn. Mmmmmm, homegoods and furniture. Watched the Simpsons, and generally hung about reading and chit-chatting, as we are wont to do. I got a new book. I love books. I like the way they feel clutched in my little hands, I like reading 'em, I like everything about them. But, as some can attest to, my tiny attention span means that I start more books than I actually finish. I get bored and distracted way too easily.
Speaking of books, the more I deal with my collection here at work, the more I question the point of archiving some things. I, personally, don't see these books as being terribly useful to more than a teeny-tiny subset of the already tiny historical business research group of scholars. There's just not much to work with here. I think I have a problem with the idea that just because something is old automatically means that it's a foregone conclusion that it must be a) valuable, b) important or c) useful. I dunno. Guess I'm not really cut out to become an archivist, which is actually quite the Good Thing.
That is all.

Arr. I'm feeling so snarky today for no good reason.
It doesn't help that the saga of bumbling re: the job here at work that has been hotly contested. I never actually applied for it or sent in my resume, for personal-life reasons that had nothing to do with any office politicking or whatnot. Besides the fact that the manager who was going to keep me in "the loop" failed to do so, making me even less inclined to put any effort into trying to get the job that for all intents and purposes had already been promised to someone else. So, said manager came up to me today and rambled on about how they've chosen their "candidate" for the job. To which I replied, "ok, I never actually put my resume in you know." argh. don't waste my time bumbling about with me- if I didn't put myself in the running I don't need to know that you're done making decisions. whatever.
I didn't sleep well last night, though apparantly I laugh in my sleep, which I can only hope is cute and endearing. Had a most odd dream about having to find something in a building whose address was "21 Jump St." (for some reason). I just kept going up and down the elevator, and was lost, though I don't remember what I was trying to find. I think it was a bomb or something because I was also really scared through the whole thing.
Ok, half the day is down, I'm boss-less, and have found an mp3 of Nelly Furtado's "I'm Like a Bird." That song just makes me happy. There's actually a chapter on it in Nick Hornby's Songbook, which is quite a good book. I wish I could write a book like that. Well, I could but I'm not Nick Hornby so I doubt many people would buy it. After work I will go home and do some serious kickboxing to work out job-related stress and will be all better.

i'm feeling non-linear, so here's a bunch of thoughts.
a walk down to harvard square has convinced me that it would unequivocally be the WRONG decision to go to class tonight. i dunno what i'll be doing, but i can tell ya that no matter what, it will be Good. i suppose i should have a guiness.
this weekend was pretty darn great. everyone who was there is awesome.
My current reading selection is really interesting- Food For the Dead: On the Trail of New England's Vampires.
"Tom Waits sings like cookie monster." teehee. (stolen from The Hipster Handbook)
i *heart* my jeans, they make my butt look damn fine.

This is a top ten (+1) of the books that had the biggest impact on me when I read them. Not all are ones that would make it if I read them for the first time today, but they were important at the time. Although #1 is my super-all-time-most-favorite book Ever.
1.House of Leaves- Mark Danielewski
2. Ground Beneath her Feet- Salman Rushdie
3. Nightwood- Djuna Barnes
4. Tropic of Cancer- Henry Miller
5. Wuthering Heights- Emily Bronte
6. You Get so Alone at Times That it Just Makes Sense- Charles Bukowski
7. Jitterbug Perfume- Tom Robbins
8. The Bell Jar- Sylvia Plath
9. The Rainbow- D.H.Lawrence
10. High Fidelity- Nick Hornby
11. Outlander- Diana Gabaladon (don't laugh. well, you can. but i like it!)

i've started on one of my new books, The Last Samurai by Helen DeWitt, and am very undecided on it at this point. granted, this point is only 50 pages into it. so i got it because the title was cool, i liked the cover, and it sounded interesting. it appears to be striving for the po-mo House of Leaves thing, wherein the text jumps around requiring non-linear reading, but it's not really hitting the style right. i don't know about this. it got a boatload of praise from the various and sundry reviews i've read, so i'm hoping it gets better.
damn you insound.com!!! so much music i don't have... i want my indie cred back!
i totally just bought the newest albums from: Spoon, 764-Hero, Sigur Ros and Interpol.
i nearly weeped when i saw how few of Pitchfork's top 100 of the year i own. my record collection's growth stopped in college.

music: sarge- end of july
i seriously need to do more shopping for presents. i've had such a block this year, i can't seem to make myself do it. it could be because i dislike the entire holiday Thing. especially this year- i'm not looking forward to the trip down to north carolina at all. although apparantly my mom is willing to get me drunk, as she mentioned champagne and good wine (better than the $10 wine in which i am wont to imbibe). i guess it can't be that bad- i'll just be spending three days getting quietly drunk and trying to make a dent in the robert jordan book i've abandoned for the past couple of months... must...finish...book 6.

mood: cold
music: whiskeytown- midway park
drat. i was planning on going to newbury comics and the "punk" store in the garage (i need a belt), but it's too painfully cold to make the 15 minute trek down to the square. so i spent the bulk of my lunch break reading The Perks of Being a Wallflower, a book i've read at least 5 times, and get a hankering for about once a year. i wish i had my Smiths cd with me...
my office has been invaded by lots o' shelving and noisy people.
i've also decided that my subject lines will be lines from whatever song i happen to be listening to, as i totally hate trying to come up with these things myself.
