Alright. I have decided that I need to make a valiant effort to get rid of my picky eating habits. If, after a valiant effort, I still don't like stuff, I think I'll have earned the right to not like it. To that end, I made some lamb souvlaki last night. I'll have to give lamb a couple more shots, but there's some sort of weird taste I get from it that is just unappealing. I think I can tolerate mini-lamb chops, so maybe my chunks o' lamb last night were too big and thus too... lamby.

Anyway, so also to that end, I need to make a good faith effort into fish. It would be nice to have some protein options for dinners other than beef/pork/poultry/cheese, and it would also be nice to not have a crippling disgust for a food that's eaten by tons of people in the world. All the advice I'm getting on good old Metafilter is that sushi is the way to go to attempt to get over my fish thing.

So I think sometime soon I'd like to have a sushi dinner at some sort of nice sushi place around here. Because if I'm in polite company I probably won't cry like a baby while eating fish. What? I have a lot of disappointing-others issues tied into eating fish, it's a problem, I know.

I have found sushi that I enjoy, even with my OVERSTATED dislike of seafood.

And no, I'm not just talking about the veggie stuff, though the pickled radish is really kind of kick ass.

The trick is to make sure you have enough other food there so you don't feel as though you're wasting money on something you may not like.

Good luck!

You eat some fish sushi? I think I may try to arrange a sushi outing this weekend or next. If I get one fish sushi and some avacado/iniri, I can take the gamble.

I do!
I found a really nice Spicy Tuna roll at the neighborhood place that I dig.
Wonders, it appears, will never cease.

Lamb fat frequently tastes of soap to me. I've found that teh best state for Lamb is braised/stewed. It keeps all the tasty and you skim the soapy fat flavor right off the top.

Hmm, that's a good suggestion. Though I very carefully trimmed most of the visible fat, there must have been some intra-meat fat in there, too. Lamb gets a few more strikes before it's out!

Lamb does have a characteristic funk. If that funk does not appeal to you, I think you earned the right to cross that one off your list! I like that taste best when I'm tired and cold and sitting by a fire in archaic surroundings.

Or you can convince people to have a sushi-making party so that if you come across something you don't like, you don't have 5 more pieces of it to eat, so no big deal. Move on to the next kind!

(Maybe I shouldn't tell you about the sea urchin and quail egg in tobasco and soy sauce shooter?)

I do like the idea of sushi parties! I do not like the idea of shooting sea urchin and quail egg! Omg, that sounds horrible =)

trader joes sells some type of marinated lamb that is really really good when grilled. it ends up tasting much like other red meats, though, not really lamby, but so tender and so good if grilled to medium doneness.

I don't know why sushi would get you over eating fish - its raw and in your face fishy. I would think a really nicely marinated and grilled tuna or salmon steak - maybe even cutting up the fish and putting it on kebobs with veggies. Or coating it with cajun spices and blackening the fish - or having it together with sausage in a gumbo.

I'll have to check out some TJ lamb- I never remember how awesome Trader Joes is, because we don't have one that's super convenient.

I'm surprised by the number of people telling me they used to no eat fish and it was sushi that changed their anti-fish minds. Apparently there's a chemical in fish that's hard to detect when it's raw, but if I don't like sushi then chances are good I won't be able to deal with cooked fishes. At least, that's what people on the internet say. Heh.

Mmmmm, gumbo.

My now intense love of seafood started with a tuna steak just barely seared with a peppercorn crust. It tasted like a delicious, rare steak.

I started eating veggie sushi to make the move into the land of raw fish... spicy tuna was probably my first sushi with actual fish. Try something simple and inexpensive.

Spicy tuna seems to be the consensus for starter sushi, I will give it a shot! I do love veggie sushi and the kind with the little pocket of tofu on top (iniri?), so hopefully that's a good start.

Actually, inari is probably not the best sushi start if you want to enjoy sushi. In my experience, inari is often quite sweet in flavor. And while there are sushi pieces that are somewhat sweet, none will be anything like inari. Stick to mild fish like, yes, tuna and salmon. Or - if you wanted a cooked sushi - try the eel. It's Rik's favorite, and its preparation probably will remind you somewhat of inari in flavor.

I don't think you should make your own meal consisting of the things you don't like when you're trying to create a liking for them. Not because I don't think you have the ability to cook because we all know you totally do, and are very good at it, but because you should have someone who really knows their stuff making you a first meal. For this reason, I'd go to a good sushi restaurant for a first experience, not have friends make some for you. I've done many a sushi night at home and even I would be wary of making straight up raw fish sushi--we used cooked fish and veggies.

Concerning fish, a seared tuna steak is a very good entry into fishland. Mmmm, fishland.

That's definitely a good point. Also, I have a habit of cooking meat to death, and I think that would make fish even grosser. I am going to arrange a sushi outing soon! We can all go to... fishland. Hee.

Interesting. I, personally, loathe fish. HATE IT. And *forced* myself to eat it while pregnant just for the stupid protein. HATE IT EVEN MORE, NOW. However - LOVE sushi! To be fair, I mostly eat veggie sushi, but not always. And there is some TASTY sushi out there. There is also the not so tasty. I remember when my dad introduced me to sushi as a teen. I had a piece that tasted like Virginia Beach smells. I didn't like that one at all. But otherwise, generally quite good.

Also - Lamb is a tough one. Depends a lot on preparation, and yes, to some extent serving size. It is often served rarer than other meats. Which I think keeps it from going tough & funky, but I dunno. Rik LOVES lamb. I make a garlic & rosemary crusted boneless leg of lamb every Easter because it's his favorite thing. (Roast it with garlic/rosemary crusted tiny potato, and you get some pretty awesome potato at the end). This is going to sound bizarre, but ... the skin of that (although it's not REALLY skin, but I mean the crust that forms during the cooking) is super ultra tasty. More bizarre -- Rik's favorite thing with leftover lamb: Mac & Cheese with hunks of lamb. He loves it. You never know, but that kind of application might make it more appealing. (But I'm with you - lamb is a gamey food, and if you don't like the flavor, you're well within your rights, sister!)

Huh, mac & cheese with lamb? I would never have thought of that. I did think it was kind of gamey but Drew was like "that's not gamey! it's delicious!" I thought it kind of tasted like feet smell.

Veggie sushi is definitely the tasty, so maybe I'm halfway there to fish sushi. I'm gonna try it, but I have mixed feelings about how well this experiment will work!

I would be happy to join you for some sushi out. I'm sure Peter would as well.
Fish is delicious, but I have to agree, I"m not sure sushi is the place to start.
I would go to a seafood restaurant, find something that has lots of other things you like, and then order that.

Then again, I've always liked fish, so I may not be the best person to ask about where to start. Whichever way you go, I"m down. :)

Sweet, we shall get sushi sometime soon! I'd also like to hit up the East Coast Grill for cooked fishes at some point, I hear they're good, and if I get something super spicy the spice may overwhelm the oceany taste.

Good seafood, ie fresh seafood, should have no oceany taste. It should just taste like the meat.
If you have an oceany or fishy smell or taste, it's not fresh fish.

I'm definitely interested in sushi-eating. A new place called Privus just opened in Allston, right next to the Kells, and while I have no idea if it's any good, it sure looks purty. Of course, you're not as superficial as I am, so if you don't want to judge a book by its cover, the reviews on Yelp look pretty good.

Of course, from reading through the reviews, it seems like it's mandatory to make fun of the Kells if we go there, which might be a turnoff.

Wow, you mention food, and everyone gets all excited. Okay, well here's my 2 cents: different types of fish taste differently. Even different cuts can affect your tastes. Some fish tastes distinctively "fishy", while others are much more mild. It will be up to you to see which you prefer. That being said, my favorite food on this earth is salmon. The best is from the Northwest. Atlantic salmon is not as flavorful (in my opinion). It has to be cooked right too. I've been to some restaurants that somehow manage to ruin it to the point where all you taste is the cooking spices/sauce.

Food and politics get the crowd going! I think I'll have to work up to salmon, it's definitely a fishier fish. Though I'd be all right with it if all I can taste is the cooking sauce! =)
