Our wedding invitations arrived today. It's very surreal to see one's name on a wedding invitation. Especially when one was the president and founder of the "No Marriage Club," and used to rail against the institution of marriage.

My weekend went down as [info]c_m_i describes it, except instead of geeking to computer games yesterday I was running errands, reading the stack of Cook's Illustrateds that [info]aquarianna6 lent me, and baking cookies. I'm also reading The Blind Assassin, but it's not nearly as good as the last 2 Atwood books I've read. Oh, I'm also reading Word Freak, about competitive Scrabble players, and it's good, but also not completely engrossing. Of course, I'm also in the middle of a handful of history books that I've been distracted away from.

I did our taxes this weekend, and am very pleased to see that I can expect large sums of money shortly. Yay for large sums of money!

Wait until you do your taxes after getting married. I about died from heart failure last year when we found out how much we were getting. We got back a whole lot of bucks.

Isn't there a marriage penalty? I don't know, I think we both make enough money for the government to take, take, take.

All I know is that between the two of us, with all Allastair's education credit and the deduction for rent and for paying interest on his school loans, we got a lot back. We make less than you, but not by TOO much, I don't think. This year we're expecting back even more. So, if there's a penalty, I certainly haven't noticed =) Of course, I am not a tax-person, so take my advice giving with a big, fat grain of salt.

What do you mean a deduction for rent?

On our state taxes, you can take a deduction for rent. I don't know if Maine has that or not. You can't deduct all your rent, but you can deduct a small portion of it.

Actually Maine has some property tax relief, but we can't apply for it until August. It's weird, but that just means that we'll get money later.

That's good to know. Though we've been doing well getting the education deductions, and we won't be getting those next year. It'll be weird, 'cause Drew takes different exemptions on his W-2s than I do, but I also make more money than he does, so that will probably balance it out. Guess we'll find out for sure next year.

Do any of you guys know where you are supposed to claim graduate tuition reimbursement? The tuition that USM pays for my classes is taxable but we can't figure out where we are supposed to claim it and we've looked all over the internet to try to figure it out.

I would bet it just goes under income (i.e. same place as salary and winnings)

Hrm. You can always call the IRS hotline (though my boss used to work at the IRS hotline, and he said they often had no clue what they were doing, and you're still held liable if you do something wrong based on their advice).

But, and I could be wrong here, my thinking is: you can actually deduct from your income the amount of money you pay for school (I think there's a $4,000 cap or something), so it doesn't make much sense that they'd tax something you could then deduct. I bet your school's financial aid department could clarify it best, though.

You know, it still doesn't seem real to me that you're getting married. I think it won't really sink in until I see you walk down the aisle in your pretty princess dress.

You are now joining the dark side. Mwahahahaha.

It does seeem kind of strange at first. The weirdest thing is when people start calling you zMrs.

I am not Mrs. Robitaille, but kids have to call me this because I work in schools.

That will be weird. That's so weird to think of little kids saying "good morning Mrs. Robitaille" to you. =)
